June 29th marks the first year anniversary of the very first vehicle that is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. In fact, this vehicle is the first of its kind in the world to be actually leased to an individual retail customer and it bears the name Honda FCX. This is the announcement given by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. And Honda is celebrating this event.

The vehicle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell has been leased by Honda to the Spallino family who is actually based in the Los Angeles area. Jon Spallino is the person who has signed for the lease and uses the FCX. He comments, “I am surprised at the amount of attention and rubbernecking received while driving the FCX. Despite being a developing technology, we have not suffered from any reliability issues and the car has all the comforts and conveniences we need.”

The Spallino family uses the Honda FCX on their everyday drives to their daily activities. In fact, the vehicle has already traveled a couple thousands of miles already. The trips have been largely made to the supermarket, to the Spallino children’s soccer practices, as well as the daily commutes to their workplace. The family has been constantly stopped though by the public who has been very interested about their experiences in riding such a car. Some would even blatantly ask to have a ride in their Honda FCX. But after twelve months, the family is no longer surprised by these actions.

On the anniversary of such a lease, Gunnar Lindstrom says, “The lease of the Honda FCX to the Spallino family demonstrates the real-world viability of fuel cell vehicle technology and its ability to meet the needs of a family on an ongoing basis. Honda will continue to evolve and refine hydrogen vehicle technology based on feedback from real world customers, and we’ll see that expressed in future models.” Lindstrom is the senior manager of Honda’s Alternative Fuels Sales and Marketing department.

So, do you rely on a crystal ball to predict the future? A lot of good that will do you. Change is coming in the way cars are built, marketed, and sold. Are you ready?
Predicting the future is a risky proposition often filled with guesstimates and theories based on current events and hoped for consequences. At the same time, automakers are busy doing just that in anticipation of future consumer demands, emerging markets, fuel availability, and so much more. So, with all of that in mind and knowing that only God knows the future, here are some of my predictions concerning worldwide automotive production circa 2015.

Consolidation General Motors, Toyota, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Peugeot/Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and some other manufacturers are likely to snap up competitors, especially in emerging markets. Nope, I do not see the end of GM or Ford. Instead, I see both automakers concentrating on what they do best: making money overseas. The big factor in all of this will be the impact that Chinese built cars will have on local markets. If the cars are fairly well made and priced below the prevailing market rate, look for several companies to join forces in a bid simply to survive. Look for low priced Indian built cars to be sold worldwide beginning early in the next decade.

Emerging Markets China and India are the emerging markets of today. Look for several African nations to be the market for tomorrow provided further internecine violence doesn’t quell growth. The Central American nations and several South American countries will also benefit from strong growth.

New Fuels Hybrid gas/electric technology will only be a blip on the screen once hydrogen cars enter production. Honda is probably the closest to building production hydrogen powered cars with GM and Toyota not too far behind. Once the first hydrogen powered cars enter production, the world will see a revolution in automotive technology not seen since the advent of the internal combustion engine. Expect government mandates to ensure that every automaker has access to hydrogen technology.

New Technology Think green! Besides hydrogen power, the actual vehicle body is likely to change significantly too. Depending on availability, lightweight composite materials will be incorporated to help reduce costs and lower weight. Truly “smart” cars will arrive that will anticipate crashes, prevent roll over, and completely shut down or takeover control if the driver is incapacitated. Look for further gains in seating comfort, sound systems, lighting, and air management.

New Transportation Although the personal passenger vehicle is not likely to ever disappear, newer versions of the same will show up especially in crowded cities. Three wheel cars, car/motorcycle hybrids, and vehicles that can be hooked up to one another [in train formation] will be produced for certain markets.

Of course, if the world is embroiled in a major war at any time, all of this will come to naught. Still, what many identify as “auto production” will change radically perhaps as soon as the next 3 or 4 years. I can’t wait, can you?

[ad]

Cheap cars are on their way. Will the quality be as low as the price or will never before seen bargains be the rule?

North American motorists have gotten used to paying $20-$25,000 or more for their new vehicles. Long gone are the days when sub $10,000 cars ruled the highways, with few cars available for under $15,000 these days. All of that will be changing as the pending introduction of cheap cars from China as well as imports from Mexico and other third world nations will reshape the automotive landscape. Will you buy one of these bargain brands or will you stick with one of the trusted names? Let’s step forward a few years to look at a radically changed automotive market and just what it may have to offer to you, the value conscious consumer.

If you follow automotive press reports then likely you have heard talk of cheaply priced cars from China being imported to the US and Canadian markets. At prices reported to be as low as US$ 6500, these cars have created a lot of buzz and have raised concern about the entire automotive industry, domestic and foreign. One big question asked includes this: how will domestic manufacturers be able to compete price wise? Well, prices won’t be quite as low as first reported once certain safety and anti-pollution measures are added in; instead the final starting price will likely be in the neighborhood of US$ 8500.

Regardless of exactly where the final starting prices are set, an economic tsunami could hit in short order.

Two of China’s top brands, Chery and Geely, are reportedly preparing to export cars to the US in 2008. Both manufacturers produce several lines of vehicles, but current manufacturing output is limited. Expect no more than 200,000 of these vehicles for the first few years, but maybe millions more once additional capacity has been brought online.

In India, several manufacturers have been quietly expanding capacity to serve the burgeoning Indian market. One manufacturer, Tata Motors, even has pledged to build a car starting at US$ 2000. That’s no typo – two thousand dollars for a new car! The last car that sold at this price in the US was the VW Beetle. Of course, you have to go back to the late 1960s to find a new Beetle at that price.

Will Tata and other Indian automakers export their cars to the U.S.? Given the current state of the Indian auto industry, likely this will not happen for some time. Capacity is expanding, but it is barely keeping up with domestic demand. Plus, each model would have to undergo extensive upgrades in order to conform to strict U.S. emissions, safety, and quality standards. Yet, the possibility of a car that will greatly undercut Chinese models in price is intriguing.

Don’t think for a moment that leading world automakers will take these challenges lying down. Ford is proposing to build a sub-$10,000 vehicle in Mexico; GM is tapping its South Korean arm Daewoo for additional low cost models; and DaimlerChrysler is shopping around for a partner to help build it own super cheap people mover for around the same price.

Toyota, Honda, and several other Asian manufacturers will be sure to respond. With factories scattered across the globe, each company can pull a model from one factory and ship it to the U.S. to compete. Already, Honda and Toyota are offering cars at around $12,000 or less and each of these models could retail for much less if they are built in countries where wage levels are very low.

So, what does all of this mean for consumers? Well, you aren’t likely to see an across the board drop in automobile prices, but you probably will see the end to “sticker shock” the phenomenon that has stunned new car buyers for the past generation. What you may find is this: $60,000 Lexus’ and $6000 Scions being sold side by side. A huge difference in price, but something that the North American auto enthusiast may find to be commonplace.

Is your fuel indicator in your dashboard informing and signaling you that it needs a little refilling? Is it telling you that its reserve of fuel has already gone low? Well, if it is, then it is them time to drive off to a gasoline station for some refueling.

Is your fuel indicator in your dashboard informing and signaling you that it needs a little refilling? Is it telling you that its reserve of fuel has already gone low? Well, if it is, then it is them time to drive off to a gasoline station for some refueling.

Of course, not all gasoline stations have attendants who would do all the refilling for you. There are some stations that are self-service. This means that you would have to do the pumping for gas on your own. Refilling your own gas for your car is simple and easy. There is no need to worry about it.

You should first figure out which side of your car holds the key to your gas tank. And when you have done so, you should be able to park your car where the fill spout is facing the pump where you would be getting your gas. The logic behind this is very simple: it would not be difficult to refill your gas tank this way.

When you have parked your car with the fill spout right in front of the gas pump, it is time to turn off your car’s engine and get out of your car. You should open your gas tank door. Some cars’ tank doors can be opened with a button from the inside of your car. However, there are also some that can be opened with a key. When you have successfully opened it, you should unscrew the cap of the gas tank.

Then, pay for the gas. If you are paying with a credit card, you can simply run the card through the machine. If not, you would have to see the attendant first. When you have done so, then follow the printed instructions which are usually found posted near the machine. Then select the type of gas that you would be filling up for your vehicle. Make sure you know what kind of fuel your car runs on. Then lift the handle of the gas off and insert it into the gas tank. Push it in firmly so that it is secure and that no gas could escape. Then, you can start filling in your gas. Once filled up, it is time to put the gas tank cap back in.

Just recently, the Honda Motor Company, Ltd. has announced that they are going to build a new automobile plant in Yorii, Osato county, Saitama prefecture in Japan. This new plant that they would be creating would be actually able to operate come the year 2010, during the early part of that year.

Just recently, the Honda Motor Company, Ltd. has announced that they are going to build a new automobile plant in Yorii, Osato county, Saitama prefecture in Japan. This new plant that they would be creating would be actually able to operate come the year 2010, during the early part of that year. The company estimates that its annual production capacity would be an approximate of some 200,000 units of engines as well as finished automobiles.

So where is Yorii? Yorii is a town in Japan. It is located in the northwestern part of Saitama prefecture. This is some 35 kilometers away from Sayama City and this is also the location of one of Honda’s existing plants which is known as the Saitama Factory or the Sayama Plant. The company plans that when the Yorii plant starts its operations, they will make sure that the existing Sayama Plant would be renovated and updated so as to make it the most advanced production plant in its operations.

The new plant’s construction still has not yet started although Honda is planning on starting it in a couple of years. The new plant for Honda would be constructed on a lot that measures around 800,000 square meters. They have also already come up with possible statistics and investment numbers. As per investment, they have an expected approximation of some 70 billion yen. They would also be able to employ roughly around 2,200 associates come the start of production of the Yorii Plant. Another fact is that come the total annual production for the company, they would have an increase of production. The current number is some 1.3 million units. They are looking at some 1.5 million units produced.

Takeo Fukui, the president and CEO of Honda Motor Co, Ltd., has something to say about their plans, “Honda will establish a high quality and highly efficient manufacturing system by applying the latest technologies. The new plant will be responsible for evolving these manufacturing systems to other Honda operations across the world.”

Starting with the 2007 model year, Nissan will be making changes to its line up which will ultimately mean that the Maxima will be redesigned, equipped with more standard equipment, and cost you more. You can thank Toyota’s Avalon, in part, for this change.

The Nissan Motor Company is quietly working on a campaign to overhaul their car line up. Current models, including the Maxima, Altima, and Sentra, soon will be transformed into more luxurious and expensive models while a new car line, the Versa, is welcomed into the fold and sold as the automaker’s introductory model. So, why this change for Nissan? Will the automaker’s plans succeed or fail? A lot is hinging on this move by Nissan, perhaps more than meets the eye.

The Nissan motor division has been a good performer in the highly competitive US auto market. With the transformation of the make’s name from Datsun to Nissan in the early 1980s to the introduction of a luxury line, Infiniti, in the late 1980s, the Nissan Motor Company has benefited financially and its customers have been receptive to the changes. Still, Nissan’s line is a perennial third place finisher among Japanese automakers in the lucrative U.S. auto market, easily being outperformed and outsold by Toyota and Honda year in and year out.

The pending changes for Nissan’s line up are coming about and for the following reasons:

1.	The Maxima’s competition, the Toyota Avalon, was overhauled for the 2006 model year. The Avalon has shed its frumpy image as it borrows Lexus styling cues to give it a much more luxurious and appealing look. An improved interior and more standard equipment has pushed a fully loaded Avalon into the low to mid-30s range as well. Nissan’s response to Toyota’s move is to “Infinitize” the Maxima starting with the 2007 model year by giving it a more luxurious edge to compete effectively with the Avalon.

2.	Introduction of the Versa. To fight Toyota’s budget minded, youth friendly Scion division, Nissan will be importing the Versa — a 1.8L 4 cylinder powered xA-competing hatchback — expected to retail at about $12,000. To make way for the new introductory level car, both the Sentra and Altima get a slight push up market, not as noticeable as the Maxima’s bump up, but enough to distinguish these two lines from each other and from the Versa.

Of course, Nissan won’t be selling the Maxima, Altima, or Sentra for less than what you pay for these cars now. In fact, the Maxima’s price may ultimately surge several thousand dollars and into the range of cars sold by their Infiniti division which begs the following question: why purchase a Maxima when an Infiniti G35 could be had for almost the same price?

At the same time, both the Altima and Sentra risk being undercut price wise by American and Korean manufacturers hungry to carve out a greater share of the market. Indeed, the all new Alabama-built Hyundai Sonata should sell for several thousand dollars less than a comparatively equipped Altima. With Hyundai’s quality levels improving, the Sonata’s appeal rises measurably.

Ultimately, Nissan must keep pace with Toyota and Honda or risk being marginalized further. With other manufacturers duking it out, it will be interesting to see if higher prices hold for Nissan models or whether the Japanese automaker will be forced to cut prices to win consumers and to hold onto market share.

The Honda division is getting “all the goods” when it comes to alternate fuel technology, while Acura is missing out. All that will radically change within the next few years.

While parent company Honda continues to bestow all of its hybrid technology on its Honda division vehicles, Acura is doing without any alternate engine sources to power their cars and SUVs. Instead, the division is relying on newer gasoline engines to promote fuel efficiency as well as to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Is Acura doing enough or is Honda’s luxury division missing the boat? Big changes are headed Acura’s way, changes that could enormously overhaul the brand and bring to the market vehicles powered by a variety of alternate fuel sources. Let’s examine exactly what might be Acura’s alternate powerplant offerings at the beginning of the next decade.

Diesel, Biodiesel – Honda got into the diesel market late, but the company’s first offerings are considered to be exceptionally good. Four cylinder powered diesel engines are being developed that will initially appear in select Honda model cars within the next two years. These new engines meet current EPA guidelines and raise the typical fuel mileage of each car by about 30%. Importantly, each engine will be able to run on biodiesel a renewable resource made of ingredients such as soybeans. Acura may get its own diesel aspirated engine soon after the launch of the first diesel powered Honda hits the market.

Ethanol – Unlike American based automakers, Honda has no plans to offer vehicles that can run on E85 technology. E85, consisting of 85% ethanol [usually corn] and 15% straight gasoline has been getting a lot of press attention lately. However, the extreme lack of service stations offering the fuel has kept demand low. Honda has decided to concentrate on next generation hybrid technology instead of branching out to E85.

Hydrogen – Claiming that the first hydrogen powered car will be ready for production within the next 3 or 4 years, some are doubting that Honda will be prepared to make such a move until well after then. Look for Acura to only get a hydrogen powered car several years after the first Honda hydrogen vehicle has been successfully tested in Japan.

Pluggable Hybrid – To extend hybrid fuel economy even further, pluggable hybrid powered vehicles are currently being developed. Acura’s first hybrid may include this technology once Honda readies it for the market. Toyota is readying a similar model and Ford is doing likewise. 100 mpg may be a realistic figure once these vehicles are rolled out.

Natural Gas – A natural gas powered Acura isn’t likely to be produced, simply because Honda is investing in hybrid, diesel, and hydrogen technology above all else. Still, natural gas could be used in future fuel cell vehicles to make hydrogen. Thus, in an indirect way natural gas could power an Acura vehicle of the not-too-distant future.

So, although it would appear that Acura isn’t getting the same alternate fuel technology as the Honda division is at the moment, it would appear that all of that will change in the very near future. This is good news for people who enjoy the Acura brand, but want to see it expand to include options that are environmentally friendly and promote fuel efficiency.

A V8 powered Hyundai? Are you kidding? No, I am not. Hyundai has one and is eager to bring it to the US. Move over Toyota and Honda, watch out Lexus and Infiniti: Hyundai has a car that will compete against your best models.

One generation after the introduction of its first line of cars in the US, Hyundai Motors is preparing to import to the US its first V8 powered car. The Equus, a full sized sedan, will be new to the US market, but the Korean automaker has been making large cars for years. Please read on for more information about this exciting development.

Give Hyundai credit. In the teeth of strong competition from Asian and American automobile manufacturers, the South Korean auto giant has managed to carve out a niche for itself in the hyper-competitive US auto market. Twenty years after the Excel Pony was introduced at the budget price of $3750, Hyundai has upgraded its line up and now sells small and medium models, sporty cars, and a pair of SUVs.

For 2006, Hyundai has released an all new Accent and its first larger car, the Azera. Powered by an aluminum 3.8L V6 engine, the Azera compares favorably in size and in amenities with the Toyota Avalon, the top of the line car for the Japanese automaker. However, Hyundai isn’t finished just yet.

Waiting in the wings is a full sized rear wheel drive car, the Equus. With the same standard engine as the Azera, the Equus also comes with a V8 and will be positioned to compete directly with the Buick Lucerne, perhaps even Cadillac’s DTS. The current model, introduced in 1999, is undergoing a major revision and will be replaced in 2006. Hyundai hopes to bring this model to the US by 2008, although the Equus name might be changed. Hyundai is also looking at the possibility of creating a separate line of luxury cars and making the “Equus” its first entrant.

We don’t know too much about the Equus as Hyundai is keeping mum about what they have planned. Regardless, introducing a full sized luxury car into the US market is smart and knowing how Hyundai prices their products the car will be a relative bargain for consumers and more competition for Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Mercedes, BMW, Lincoln, Buick, and Cadillac.

Honda needs a Scion fighter…badly! Is the FIT, it? Or, will this little car now cruising Japanese street get a name change?

Credit Honda with not giving up easily in what will certainly become a big fight: the sub $15,000 price range category of new automobiles. Currently, only a stripped down Civic competes in this area and I mean stripped: no a/c, basic tranny, no radio! With Toyota’s Scion brand catching on Honda is looking to fight back. A tiny car now on sale in Japan may soon find its way to a dealership in your neighborhood helping to turn the tide for the revered automaker.

So, why the big push in this “cheap” category? Chiefly because automakers know that if young and first time buyers have a very good experience with their entry level cars then more than likely they will stay with the brand as their lives change, i.e., get married, start a family, make more money, etc. This practice has been in place for years, although not as widely emphasized by all manufacturers and to their detriment.

Honda’s long time low price leader has always been the Civic. Introduced to the North American market in 1971, the Civic was the original Honda for the western hemisphere and has been a value leader in its class for some time. However, like the Toyota Corolla, the Civic has been gradually creeping up market becoming better equipped and more expensive. At least Toyota slipped in a new entry level car a few years back, the Echo, but Honda has been without one. In addition, Toyota launched an all new brand, Scion, in 2003 to capture a bigger chunk of the youth market. So far, Scion has been a runaway success story.

Enter the Fit. Say, what?! Yes, a tiny Scion-like car sporting a 1.5L engine is already navigating Japanese streets. Unfortunately, the name isn’t catchy and likely will have to be changed once the car is imported to the US and Canada. Let’s just say that some of the names that rhyme with Fit are not exactly favorable. At least it isn’t as obvious as Daewoo’s Charade a car that really lived up to its name!

We don’t know a lot yet about the Fit other than to say that Honda knows that they need to respond to Toyota and soon. Honda doesn’t appear willing to create a separate brand to take on Scion, but a car in the class of the Fit will help Honda capture a bigger chunk of the all important youth market. With styling cues reportedly similar to the Scion xA, the “Fit” will likely be fitted into the bottom of the Honda line up. Paired with the Element, both vehicles will be perceived as true Scion fighters. At least Honda hopes that you do.

Honda is launching yet another vehicle in the United States and the rest of North America. And this time around, it would be called the Honda Fit.

The Honda Fit has already been making its rounds in Europe and Asia. And it has already been reaping in success for it is already one of the huge and biggest sellers in those areas. According to Chuck Schifsky, who is the manager of the regional public relations operations of American Honda, “The Fit comes to America with several attributes for those customers who want an attractive, efficient, and safe small car.” Aside from this, the Fit is also claiming to be a huge potential for the American market.

Despite it being physically small, it still holds a gigantic amount of features. This new vehicle holds a 1.5 liter VTEC engine that can actually produce some 109 horsepower. Features that it holds include front air bags, front side air bags, side curtain air bags, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, air conditioning, air filtration, power windows, power side mirrors, a 60/40 split Magic Seat, anti lock ABS brakes, four interior configurations, a stick transmission system or an automatic transmission system, and it also comes as a hatchback.

The Honda Fit would be joining the ranks wherein the Chevy Aveo, Toyota Yaris, Kia Rio, Nissan Versa, and Mini Coopers are competing with each other. Just like these other vehicles, the Fit is promising not only efficiency and performance despite its small stature. It is also promising
