What to do when your fuel pump “gives it up” without warning.

Cruising down the highway at 70mph in your ‘98 Bimmer you notice a strange sound coming from somewhere underneath your car. You proceed down the road a few more miles before exiting and making the turn into your subdivision. The sound magically disappears and you dismiss it as something that must have wedged itself underneath your car and then worked itself free. However, your car engine buckles, hesitates and then dies as you make the turn into your driveway. Fortunately, you made it home. Unfortunately, your fuel pump has gone to auto parts heaven.

Sure, we can dream that your fuel pump died just as you got home. How convenient. In all likelihood the problem would have surfaced while you were on a long trip, on a Sunday afternoon, miles from no where. Fuel pump failures can happen without warning and without any engine codes signaling the problem. In other words: when it happens you are SOL.

Replacing a fuel pump is a job that many weekend mechanics would feel comfortable with doing provided they are at home and have the right tools on hand. Still, you will be working with gasoline which will require you to prop your car up and then drop the gas tank down to replace the pump. I did say that the fuel pump is located inside of the gas tank, didn’t I? Oh, yeah, one small matter…you need to have the replacement fuel pump on hand before proceeding with the work.

You can go to a local auto parts store and have your pick of low priced generic pumps that just may last you a few years. Chances are that once you have gone to all the trouble of installing the low priced model, you would have wished you put in a Bosch fuel pump or given your Bimmer a BMW fuel pump even though it would have cost you plenty to buy one, right? Well, not exactly. By shopping online you can turn up some very good prices provided you select the name brand fuel pump and that you buy it from a reputable dealer. Ebay may work well for buying dolls and trinkets but your automobile parts should come from someone you can trust.

Once you have the right part on hand you can continue with the job. Follow your owner’s manual instructions to get the job done and done right. Your Bimmer will be glad, particularly if you remember to install a new fuel filter with your fuel pump.

Spring and summer vehicle check-over

It is that time of the year, spring will be here soon, following that, “hot summer days” (I hope)

Anyway it will be time to get our cars and trucks ready for spring and summer:

Under the hood

Engine oil, I suggest that you change both the oil and filter,
Coolant (level, colour and strength) Do Not run with only water, and keep the antifreeze at -45 C or -50 F
Air condition, check it out now, don’t wait until summer when it is hot out, (your wife and kids won’t be very happy if it does not work)
Transmission, Is it due for a Transmission service? How does the oil smell? Is the colour nice and red? How does it perform? (slippage, hesitation, bump, slow engaging) Is the level within limits? Do you see any leaks?
Power steering, again check the level, smell and leaks.
Belts and hoses, check for cracks and/or frayed hoses, check hoseclamps and if there are spring type clamps, give them a close look (I have seen them break in half, and the radhose came off) You can guess what was next!
Battery and Cables, keep the clamps clean and tight, check the battery charge, charging system.
Sparkplugs, when was the last tune-up? Some engines have “long life” plugs in them, but if you have 60,000 km or miles on your vehicle, pull one or two plugs to see what they look like. Check the plugwires (Corroded, Oil soaked, cracked) replace them, it might be that you go up a long hill, you find that the engine is bucking (could be just one or two wires)
Airfilter, I think that the filter is the most forgotten item under the hood. Can you see light through it when you hold it up to a lamp (lamp on, of course, LOL) I have seen some pretty dirty one where no air can pass through, if the engine does not get enough air, it just works harder to get air and uses more fuel, at today’s price of fuel……well, you fill in the blank. You can clean the filter by tapping it against a wall, check it again, replace if needed.
Windshield washer fluids, what I do is from now on I start adding the summer washer fluid, you know the pink stuff (the bug remover fluid). If the container is clean just add to it, that way you’ll still have some antifreeze washer fluid (just in case it still get cold).

Under the vehicle

Exhaust system, check for leaks, damage, rusting muffler, etc.(remember exhaust fumes can kill)
Steering, check all steering parts for looseness, (remember that pothole you hit?)
Suspension, check ball joints, struts, springs, shocks. (all these parts can make your vehicle act like a donkey on a narrow path) (can you picture this?) All kidding aside, failure in any of these parts can make you loose control over your vehicle!
Ride height, look for low hanging parts, i.e.. low exhaust system, brake/fuel lines, wire harness, etc.
Engine/transmission mounts, Swaybar, check all bushings for cracks or wear.

Outside of vehicle,

Wipers, replace those winter wiperblades, if last years blades are still good, use them. (same with the winter blades, if still good, keep them until next fall)
All lights, check all bulbs, replace those that are out. (the most forgotten light is the centre brakelight and licenseplate bulbs) Check also for headlight beam height, fog and driving light included. (we have all had a vehicle coming towards us with high adjusted lights)
Tires, Off with those studded tires, (most states or provinces have a law against studded tires at a certain date) Remember AWD’s and 4WD……Same size tires all around (I recommend: same size, same brand!)
Tire pressures, as shown on the drivers door or in your owners handbook.

Inside the vehicle.

Brakes, how does the brake pedal feel? If the pedal is spongy or the brakes don’t work as good as they should, you may have air in the system and/or the brake rotors/drums, pads/shoes are worn. (remember, poor brakes makes for a slow stopping vehicle………whoooo there Nellie)
Brake and warning lights, (bulb check on the dashboard) these should come on for a few seconds when you first start the engine, if all OK go off and stay off.

General, I think we all know that a clean vehicle runs and rides better, so give baby a nice warm bath and slap a good coat of carpolish on her and she’ll hum like a happy bee.

Happy and safe Motoring.

From the Ford Motor Company’s luxury division, the Lincoln brand has introduced to the world the Lincoln Mark IV. By taking a look at the style and design that the Lincoln Mark IV has, one could be able to see that most of the motifs and angles are just like the Lincoln Mark III.

From the Ford Motor Company’s luxury division, the Lincoln brand has introduced to the world the Lincoln Mark IV. In the United States and the rest of North America, this vehicle was actually sold and marketed from 1972 up until 1976. It replaced the Mark III although it was already successful that time. Later on, the Mark V replaced this vehicle. For most parts and most of the specifications, the Lincoln Mark IV and the Ford Thunderbird were very much alike. Even the platform was shared by the two vehicles.

By taking a look at the style and design that the Lincoln Mark IV has, one could be able to see that most of the motifs and angles are just like the Lincoln Mark III. These include the tall Rolls Royce style grille, the fashionable long hood short deck style, the covered headlamps, the “spare tire hump” found in the trunk, and the taller and knife-edged fender line. As per the grille, the Lincoln Mark IV’s version is much taller. And to allow this kind of adjustment, the close fitting bumpers were dipped. The “spare tire hump” was more rounded and from thereon, the lines led further down the vehicle. As per measurements, though, the Lincoln Mark IV came out to be longer and wider. The angles were slightly softened out and made more rounded. The wheel openings were made to be symmetrical front to rear like in the Oldsmobile Tornado inspired style that was popular that time. The Lincoln Mark IV also held a vinyl roof.

The power of this machine and vehicle comes from a 460 cubic inch or 7.2 liter Ford 385 series V8 engine. On its introduction, it has been that this vehicle could prove to produce and create some 212 units of horsepower or 158 kW. To assist this engine, the Lincoln Mark IV also came with a C6 3 speed automatic transmission system.

In 1976, Lincoln took a gamble and made the Designer Series. When it was introduced that year, the Lincoln Mark IVs under this series were actually holding colors, trims, and interior choices designed by fashion designers. Each of the designer signed at the opera window, plus a name engraved on the gold plated plaque on the instrument panels. There were four designers that time that took their time to show off their craft using Lincoln Mark IV. The series comprised of the Bill Blass Edition, the Cartier Edition, the Givenchy Edition, and the Pucci Edition.

In order for all of us to understand what is going on in the world about the high price of gasoline. Let us look at one man’s quest to make the engine a better and cheaper running machine, a quick history lesson if you will.

In order for all of us to understand what is going on in the world about the high price of gasoline. Let us look at one mans quest to make the engine a better and cheaper running machine, a quick history lesson if you will.

A lot of people think of the diesel engine with the black soot soaring upwards from large semi-trucks on the highways and byways of America. We have all smelled the odor when they idle in a parking lot. If you have ever been in the Army you can remember the deuce and half trucks and their smell.

This is how the diesel engine has developed but was this the way its inventor imaged it, as an engine running on petroleum? The diesel engine was invented by Rudolf Diesel and ran with success on its fuel of choice – PEANUT OIL !

Diesel also tried out successfully with using whale oil but neither fuel was as prevailing or as easily available as petroleum. At this time petroleum based oils were the most economically obtainable.
So the engine took the route of easy oil and you now know the rest of the story.

Rudolf Diesel had stated “The diesel engine can be fed with vegetable oils and would help considerably in the development of agriculture of the countries which use it”

And later predicted that “The use of vegetable oils for engine fuels may seem insignificant today. But such oils may become in course of time as important as petroleum and the coal tar products of the present time.”

You might be asking why hasn’t someone done something about this in the past 100 years? Well, it has come full circle and we are now doing something.

Keeping the above mentioned history in mind and looking to our future, our affiliation with the oil industries and our addiction on foreign oil, hopefully, will motivate us to explore options with a more open mind. The many experiments that have lately come alive attest to what is possible if we are willing to change in a positive direction or maybe to go back to the primary vision of Rudolph Diesel and his engine.

Here a several of new advances moving full steam ahead:

1. From fat or vegetable oil through a chemical process called transesterification comes biodiesel an alternative fuel. This process breaks apart the glycerin from the fat or vegetable oil, creating two new products, glycerin and biodiesel. The most popular source for biodiesel is soybean oil, but poultry fats can also be used.

2. Ethanol, another clean-burning fuel has sparked interest in biodiesel which is being helped by new government standards and rising gas prices. A number of ethanol projects developing from corn, soft wood and other sources also are under way.

3. Also, today May 20, 2006 in the news, there is research being done in an early 1900s red brick armory at the Kossuth County fairgrounds in Iowa. The engine can run on a number of fuels including hydrogen, ethanol, natural gas, propane or digester gas from landfills. The company is initially focusing on making more efficient, environmentally friendlier engines to replace those used in generators and in forklift trucks, airline ground equipment, irrigation pumps, tractors and buses.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 commands an increase in renewable fuel usage to 7.5 billion gallons in 2012 from 4 billion gallons in 2006. The bill also supports the alternative fuel industry with production incentives such as tax credits.

Fall and winter readyness of you car suv or truck

Fall and winter maintenance hints

Engine oil (level, colour) remember winter engine idling is hard on the oil
Coolant (level, concentration of antifreeze, condition) depends where you live -45 celcius or -50 F is a good level.
Transmission (fluid level, condition, leaks?) Has it been serviced recently? Is the colour of the fluid nice and red and how does it smell (ie: burned smell?)
Power steering fluid (level, condition) Same as transmission: check smell and colour.
Belts & hose (condition) check for crackes and/or frayed belts. Hoses and clamps, check for cracks and leaks
Battery and battery cables (charge level, condition, corrosion) keep the battery clamps clean
Spark plug wires (loose, damaged?) when was the last tune-up? Vehicles are harder to start in the winter
Air filter- make sure to check with a light, if the light shines through the filter it is OK, clean filter by tapping against a wall
Windshield washer fluid- be sure to install winter washer fluids. (you don’t want a solid block of ice in your washer)
Under the Car

Exhaust system (leaks, damage)——- exhaust fumes can kill !!!!!!
Steering (loose, worn or damaged parts) How much free-play in your steeringwheel?
Suspension (ball joints, shocks, struts, springs) These parts can fall apart and you’ll have no steering
Ride height (ground clearance) look for broken exhaust pipes, mufler hanging down
Motor mounts (inspect bushings for rips, cracks, breaks) These are harder to check, watch for excesive engine movement.
Outside the Car

Wiper blades (condition) winter blades prefered, these blades wont plug-up with snow and ice.(keeps the blade flat
All lights (proper operation, angle of beam) include fog and driving lights
Tires (very important) your life rides on these. All Wheel Drives (AWD) ALL FOUR TIRES….Same size and same brand!
Studded snowtires Front Wheel Drive (FWD) Studded tires all around, (this should prevent the backend of you vehicle trying to pass you on an icy road)
Inside the Car
Brake pedal (tightness) if you have a spongy pedal you may have air in the system or worse brakepads and/or shoes worn.
Brake and warning lights (bulb check) when you first start the vehicle these bulbs should light up for a few seconds
Heater (proper operation) Sometimes heater cores plug-up and you wont have enough flow to heat inside or proper defrost
Front and rear defrosters (proper operation) Rear window is electric, are all grids working?

When a car’s engine overheats, most new drivers who have yet to experience their own share of overheating engines would be on the tip of their toes with their hearts pumping faster than usual. Panic is one thing that they do which is not the recommended reaction when encountering such a situation with your vehicle.

Your car’s engine usually overheats when there is a low coolant level in the coolant reservoir. If you do remember your basics, the coolant absorbs the heat from your engine so that it does not accumulate heat. So if there is no coolant or there is a low level of coolant, do expect such a situation to arise. Your coolant does not get used up so if there is a low coolant level, then there may be a leak somewhere.

When you do experience an overheating engine, the first thing you should do is turn off your car’s engine. This would facilitate in lessening any damages that could have been brought about by the situation. Also, make sure that you turn on your signal lights and flashers so that people and other motorists would know that you are experiencing a vehicle problem.

Then, you should turn the heater and the heater blow to high. This would make sure that heat is turned away from your engine. You should also open the hood of your vehicle and start checking the coolant level. Remember that you should not open the radiator cap if the engine is still hot. You can wait until it cools down.

Start adding coolant to the coolant reservoir. You can use a funnel for this task. Make sure that you add coolant up until the line which states that it is the right amount for your car. You can run to your trusted mechanic for repairs of your coolant reservoir once you are back on the road.

One of the most common mistakes made by a lot of people is to put a lot of stress on a cold engine. It’s always best to leave the car running for about a minute or so, before applying some throttle. Don’t let your engine run to optimum temperature, DRIVE your car to get on temperature.
One of the most common mistakes made by a lot of people is to put a lot of stress on a cold engine. It’s always best to leave the car running for about a minute or so, before applying some throttle. Don’t let your engine run to optimum temperature, DRIVE your car to get on temperature. If you start the engine on a cold winter day and wait inside your house for it to warm up, the gearbox and drivetrain is still untouched and cold. Only five minutes of normal driving is what it takes to get to the normal running temperature, and your car’s components will live a lot longer.

In cold temperatures it will take a little longer but it’s essential that you have a good working battery installed. Moving all the cold parts requires greater energy, so a 3 year old battery can give you trouble in the winter. Don’t run the electric defroster if it’s not needed anymore. The battery transforms electricity to heat and while this is comfortable in the winter, it drains extra energy from your battery. It won’t do any harm to use it when needed, but when the window is clear simply turn it off. Winter is hard enough already for the battery. The car only regenerates some power back to the battery, it will not fully charge it. Also a common misconception.

As a last tip for the freezing weather, when you want to start your car, refrain from using your wipers to wipe away the last snow. Instead wait until the glass is defrosted so you won’t tear up the blades, the wipers are resting on the glass and the blades will probably have frozen up onto your windshield. Winter is hell for cars so if you have any appreciation for your vehicle you’ll put it somewhere inside, away from the rough elements.

One of the newest in the batch 2007 hybrid car line up is the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid, the third in Toyota’s Hybrid vehicles. The Camry hybrid boasts of a performance of a top notch six-cylinder engine with the fuel economy of a four-cylinder engine.

More and more car manufacturers are developing “greener” versions of their well-known brands. The infusion of Hybrid technology has made a big splash in the motoring world and its popularity as well as the growing concern for the environment has added to the demand for this type of vehicles, urging more vehicle manufacturers to add more of their vehicles in the hybrid bandwagon to capture more potential consumers in the market.

Although it is not as fuel efficient as the first Toyota hybrid, the Prius, the Camry hybrid is a whole lot better than the regular Camry.

Never to be left behind, giant Japanese car manufacture Honda, has also the Hybrid Accord and the Hybrid Civic. These two sedans offer what Hybrids are known for, less emission and less fuel consumption.

The 2007 Honda Accord Hybrid alone combines luxury and fuel efficiency that is truly environment friendly. Even with a V6 engine that generates 253 horsepower, you can be sure that you will get more miles to the gallon. It is a nice change knowing that you get the luxury and power that you want and still get the fuel economy that we all deserve.

Then there is the 2007 Civic Hybrid which continuously provides the true essence of hybrid technology. Its ingenious engineering has rightly earned it its Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV) rating. What this means is that you don’t only get from point A to point B in less gas usage, but also save the environment by not adding to the air pollutants already swarming over it.

Joining the Hybrid car race in 2007 is General Motors second Hybrid vehicle, the 2007 Aura Hybrid sedan. This will be competing with other high-end hybrid cars such as the Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Honda Accord Hybrid. Sporting a V6 engine as well, the Aura Green Line is dedicated to providing utmost engine power with minimal gas consumption. Its engineers claim that it will be able to generate 20 percent savings in fuel economy over its conventional model.

Nissan has also announced that a 2007 Altima Hybrid will be offered and has offered test drives and a glimpse of its development vehicle. In a deal inked with Toyota, Nissan will be dedicating five years into the project with the Hybrid Technology developed by Toyota.

Rumoured to be unveiling its first hybrid model, Volkswagen is said to be preparing a full-hybrid car for 2007 but it hasn’t disclosed yet which car model they will be infusing the technology. Latest rumours said that it would be on the Jetta for the upscale engine level or in the Passat for the four-cylinder class.

With more and more vehicle manufacturers realizing the potential of Hybrid vehicles, it won’t be long before every car produced will be infused with the Hybrid technology. And as oil prices continue to soar and concerns for the environment are ever growing, we can all be sure that these vehicles will be welcomed with open arms.

If you want to know how hybrid cars work then start with this article, which includes engine design, environment issues, regenerative brakes, MPG, and hybrid system types.

[ad]

The climate of the world today is focused on global, environmental issues. Part of the movement is to reduce the reliance on oil, especially with respect to gasoline and automobiles. Gasoline also has a direct impact on the climate, as emissions contribute to atmospheric problems. One of the main ways that both of these issues are addressed is the hybrid car. The most popular kind out on the market right now is the gasoline – electric hybrid. How do these vehicles reduce emissions and reduce the reliance on oil and gasoline?

The best way to understand how hybrid cars work is to take a step back and consider a gasoline car. At the heart of the vehicle is an internal combustion engine. Into this, the vehicle feeds gasoline, which enters the engine. There, a spark causes the gas to explode, which pushes a piston, in turn powering the transmission, which moves the car. Attached to the engine, to help capture all of the energy, is an alternator, which takes the action of the engine and converts it into electricity, which typically goes into the battery. The electric drive involves the same sort of system. Motion is provided by a motor, feed with a voltage via a large array of batteries. The batteries are like a gas tank, storing electrical energy until it is needed.

Enter the hybrid, a combination of the two systems, providing more benefits and eliminating the weaknesses of each individual system. Electric cars have a major short coming in that finding a source of electricity is very difficult. Hybrid cars deal with the issue by getting the energy from gas. There are two kinds of hybrid systems, series and parallel. In a parallel hybrid vehicle, it can be though as a union of a gas car and electric car. Both systems can power the transmission at the same time, and the gas engine will help power the electric side through the alternator. This system allows the vehicle to burn gas when it is needed, but otherwise run completely off the hybrid battery .

The other system, which is more advantageous, is the series hybrid. In this vehicle, the gas engine is designed only to move the alternator. Thus, there is a more efficient conversion of energy from gasoline to electricity. There is also the benefit that a engine solely purposed for electricity generation is much smaller, and lighter, than a engine meant for power transmission. This keeps the car light, requiring less energy. Once the alternator generates energy, it is stored in the batteries and utilized by the motors in the car which transmit energy to the wheels and move the vehicle.

What are the advantages of a hybrid? Since the gas engine is smaller, it can operate closer to maximal load and provide energy much more efficiently. The net effect is much more improved gas mileage. It is thanks to that fact that a hybrid car can see 50, 60, even 90 mile per gallon fuel efficiencies. So when you for a hybrid, there are a couple considerations in evaluating different hybrid vehicles. First, is it a series system? If the hybrid is a parallel system, it will be much less efficient. Second, how small and efficient is the combustion engine. The smaller it is, and the more efficient it is, the better for fuel economy .

Hybrids are the starting point for changes that will bring about an existence with less of an impact upon the planet. Soon, all energy will be renewable and have very little impact.

Special attention is given to how electric engines and gas engines are combined to achieve a hybrid car. Time is spent explaining how hybrid car recharging works. Finally, I explain the drawbacks of hybrid cars .

Getting To Know What Is A Hybrid Car

It is pretty much obvious that technology is evolving in different fields. One sign of which would be the continuous innovations in the automobile industry. As each year passes, new systems are discovered. And as gas becomes a problem, more car technologies to save fuel are created and discovered incessantly. If youíre not that familiar with whatís new, then for sure you have little idea of what is a hybrid car. If this is the case then, here are the essential things you need to know about this type of cars.

It’s A Mix!

New hybrids could offer you the best of both worlds. This is because they give you both the power of gas fueled cars, along with the cost efficiency of electric cars . In fact, such kinds of cars are considered at present to be the highlighted showcase of what innovations from different areas could create when combined together in one vehicle.

However, if you’re not that much into technical stuff, you may find it hard to understand how hybrid cars function and process. Nevertheless, they are easy to use and are made to be user friendly by their manufacturers.

How The Motor Works

What really makes such kind of car so special is its engine. The engine’s function starts out by using windings, which are moved by electromagnetic force. Such force is produced when an electric current travels over the motor. If the currents polarity runs one way, then the motor runs one way too. As the currents polarity changes course, the motor currents direction does too.

Conventional Motors

However, the motor of a conventional vehicle is extremely different. In traditional gas engines, you would find pistons, which push up the gasoline into the crank. This pushing action provides power to your vehicle’s wheels so that it could move. This is a cycle that repeats itself for countless of times until your vehicle moves. Whenever the vehicle’s gas pedal is stepped down, gas flows into the car’s system. In turn, it increases your car’s pistons and wheel’s power.

Gas And Electricity

The great thing about hybrid vehicles is that they could make use of both electric engine and traditional engine systems. When these two systems come together, they actually produce a ground-breaking car power. When your car starts moving, its computer sensor determines what engine type would be much suitable to be used at that given point in time.

In instances that your vehicle would need high power, then your car would automatically make use of its gas engine. Just the same, when your vehicle needs low power levels, it would automatically make use of its electric engine system.

Recharging Process

In relation to the electric engine system , whenever your car stops, its hybrid battery regenerates by conserving energy. Whenever your vehicleís power drains out from your electric battery, your car would automatically use your gas engine up to the point in which your electric battery could be recharged and ready for use again.

Point Of Difference

One main difference between conventional cars and hybrids is the behaviour of their engines. Whenever a conventional car is idle, its gas would continue running. However, whenever a hybrid vehicle is idle, its motor would sense it automatically and then switches from gas engine to electric engine . When your car stops, the electric energy would be absorbed back into your battery’s electrical portion.

Drawbacks

Although these environmental friendly cars are great, they still come with a drawback. One major down point would be the vehicle’s weight . In addition to your engine’s weight there would also be add-ons which are vital to support your electric engine, so that it could run smoothly. Nevertheless, the two different engine systems could co-exist smoothly in a hybrid vehicle. In the end you get an environmental friendly and worthwhile vehicle that can also help you save money.

Don’t be surprised if you ask people "What is a hybrid car ?" and you get different answers. Although hybrids are all environmental friendly and economical, they still have variations. There are some that have charge coils, which allow users to recharge their electrical battery supply . There are also models that have alternative fuel sources like fuel cells .
